Wicked Problems in Design Thinking

Wicked problems, defined by Rittel, are a class of social system problems which are ill-formulated, where the information is confusing, where there are many clients and decision makers with conflicting values, and where the ramifications in the whole system are thoroughly confusing. Suggested by Buchanan, the fundamental issue behind wicked problems is indeterminacy, which is the opposite of determinacy. The efforts that made to solve determinate problems follow the linear, step-by-step model of design process. Through problem definition that determines the elements of the problem and specifies requirements needed, and problem solution that combines and balances the elements with each other for a final production plan, determinate problems are solved. In contrast, wicked problems can’t be solved through linear design process, since there is a fundamental indeterminacy in the problems. Indeterminate problems are not undetermined problems. Undetermined problems is definable, while indeterminate problems have no definitive conditions or limits, since, as Rittel says, there are many clients and decision makers with conflicting values, and thoroughly ramifications in the whole system.

Essentially, a design problem that is “indeterminate” and therefore “wicked” due to the peculiar nature of the subject matter of design. Design is applied; it has no special subject matter of its own apart from what a designer conceives it to be. Each individual designer has particular views on what the subject matters should be. Therefore, design problems are indeterminate and wicked. Use the words of Buchanan, design is fundamentally concerned with the particular, and there is no science of the particular.

The balance sheet: shows the financial position-assets, liabilities, and stockholders’ equity- of the firm on a particular date, such as the end of a quarter or a year.

The income or earnings statement: presents the results of operations-revenues, expenses, net profit or loss per share- for the accounting period.

The statement of stockholders’ equity: reconciles the beginning and ending balances of all accounts that appear in the stockholders’ equity section of the balance sheet.

The statement of cash flows: provides information about the cash inflows and outflows from operating, financing , and investing activities during an accounting period.

A 10-k report is an annual report required by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), that gives a comprehensive summary of a public company’s performance.

加州阳光vs百年风雨

Summer break在加州探望哥哥，顺便看看Bay Area的风景。怀抱海湾让这个地方像抱着个大空调，阳光明媚得晃眼，天气却十分凉爽。三藩市区在海湾的外沿，地处丘陵，房屋道路依山而建，绵延起伏很是性感。坐着cable car看城市若隐若现，还挺有feel。内湾里有大名鼎鼎硅谷的发源地Palo Alto。不远处，就是它的发动机——Stanford University。去看校内Art center的罗丹雕塑，正好碰上一个中国画展。美国讲解知道的还真不少，不但说技法，连文革时红卫兵因为潘天寿画秃鹫把他当奸细批斗都知道。但后来嫂子和我说，其实大多数美国人特坐井观天，电视基本就放美国新闻，电台就更local了。

又但是，他们需要知道的时候，可以做研究。大学的图书馆都是向公众开放的，其他信息集中的公共场所也大多有免费日。

托斯夫人的老公从国内带的书真是不虚此带，连旅行也带着它。特此再谢一遍。吴晓波真高人也，史料丰富，文笔优美，百年历史娓娓道来。更重要的是，他叙述的既不冰冷也不滚烫，仅仅应有正常体温的历史没有使人心旌荡漾，而于冷静中发现他隐匿于文字中的线索。所以虽已读完，仍然手不释卷。文章最后有一段关于顾准评《天演论》，吴高人用不出二十个字总结了他的评论：植根在国民精神深处的对专制的膜拜。

何为权威？知，能。无从知，遂低能，转而对专制秩序的依赖。

Chapter 8 is all about the design attitude, which is MAYA, claimed by Raymond Lowey, the self-proclaimed “Father of Industrial Design”. MAYA is short for Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable. It might be the best effort that designers can make in the commercial enviroment. More specifically, the term MOST implies that the advancement is continuous and significant; the term YET implies that certain people who lack professional judgment will resist the advancement. It therefore needs persuasion. The moment YET comes from the success of conviction. Advancement and acceptability are both time-bound conditions. And they have to be created by capturing the public imagination. True design advancement occurs when old frozen thechosocial relationship is broken by new ones that can be accepted by the market and causes positive efforts.
